Geranium Fragrances

Geranium Fragrances

Geranium is the aromatic leaf of the scented pelargonium (Pelargonium graveolens), a shrubby plant cultivated for its fragrant foliage rather than its modest flowers. The leaves and stems are steam-distilled to yield an oil prized in perfumery, with celebrated production in Egypt, China, and on the island of Reunion.

Its scent is green and rosy at once: a fresh, leafy rose softened by minty, citronella-like sparkle and a powdery, faintly fruity warmth. The effect is crisp and dewy up close, settling over time into a smooth, slightly spicy floral.

In composition, geranium is a versatile heart note bridging the green, floral, and aromatic families, and a classic pillar of the fougere. It lends a rose-like lift to masculine and feminine blends alike, pairing readily with lavender, bergamot, and clove above, and patchouli, vetiver, and sandalwood below.

About Geranium Fragrances

Geranium macrorrhizum — known in Bulgaria as Zdravetz, meaning "health" — is a wild geranium species native to the rocky mountain slopes of the Balkans, particularly Bulgaria, where it has been wildcrafted and steam-distilled for centuries. Unlike the more common rose geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), Zdravetz essential oil carries a dramatically greener, more herbaceous, and intensely earthy character — a rugged, almost wild green rose note with deep forest-floor undertones and a cool, mentholated freshness.

In perfumery, Zdravetz oil is a prized niche ingredient that adds powerful green-rosy depth to compositions. Its primary aromatic component, germacrone, gives it a distinctive sharp-green, slightly medicinal quality that is quite unlike any other geranium. Perfumers use it to add complexity and naturalistic earthiness to chypres, fougères, and green floral compositions. It has been described as rose seen through a mossy, rain-wet forest — simultaneously familiar and wild. It combines beautifully with oakmoss, vetiver, violet leaf, and labdanum.

Fragrenza's Zdravetz collection explores the bold, untamed side of Bulgarian green fragrance. These fine fragrance dupes highlight one of the Balkans' most distinctive botanical gifts — complex, herbaceous, and deeply intriguing at an accessible price point.
